What Happens When the Songs Don't Save You?

So We Never Finished the Record

Memoir by Alynn Naylor
Due Out Winter 2026

From the Publisher

This is a memoir about music, ghosts, and the men who haunt both.

Tracing the collision of art, heartbreak, and ambition, Alynn Naylor tells of fathers and bandmates, lovers and liars—a love tangled in guitars and haunted lyrics. It is not a tale of fame, but a confession, a reckoning, and a reminder that sometimes the unfinished work heals more than the masterpiece ever could.

Told in sharp, fractured chapters, So We Never Finished the Record explores grief, devotion, betrayal, and the myth that women are meant to hold the chaos of men. Feminist, lyrical, and unflinchingly honest, it is the story of abandoned songs, absent men, and the fire it takes to walk away—leaving behind a chorus that lingers long after the smoke clears and the last note fades.

At its heart, this memoir recounts a creative partnership that blurred and then fractured under its own weight, forcing Alynn to confront the ghosts she had carried since childhood. By turns raw and mythic, it speaks to anyone who has ever lost a parent, a partner, or a piece of themselves—and found a way to keep singing.

Praise for So We Never Finished the Record

“Raw, lyrical, and unflinchingly honest, this book is more than a memoir of love gone wrong—it’s a portrait of grief, music, and survival. Alynn Naylor writes with the clarity of someone who has walked through hell and come out carrying  more than just her own voice, but the voice of survival itself. This story will break your heart and then teach you how to listen for the song still playing in the silence.”
